About Us

What started as an idea in 1999 has developed into a leading public/private partnership that critically links federal and state governments with the built environment industry.  Building on relationships stemming from the Founding Partners of the NCEMBT, we have been successful in developing a proven track record through research and our ability to transfer the results into the marketplace.

How do we do this?  We focus on applied research based on critical knowledge gaps, market potential, energy impact and time to market.

The National Center for Energy Management and Building Technologies is a successful public/private partnership that dynamically links federal and state governments with applied researchers, manufacturers, building trades, local trade education facilities and the contracting community.  Each proposed task and product from the NCEMBT is subjected to the review of its partners, as well as the U.S. Department of Energy, before publication and transformation into the marketplace.  This peer review and the investment of more than $20 million in transforming buildings, improving indoor environmental quality and increasing building efficiency is creating significant leverage in understanding these fields.

The National Center for Energy Management and Building Technologies advances technology applications, expands educational and professional knowledge, improves the safety of indoor environments, and creates public policy for the benefit of public health and economic growth.  This is achieved though focusing the collective energies of our partners from multiple disciplines.

The NCEMBT initiated its research program beginning in 2004 with five projects and two research partners.  Today, the number of projects has increased to over 40, working with:

  • Academia… twelve major universities have partnered in research, education and transforming the built environment.
  • Building Owners… engaging in design, administration and operation groups with the education, health care, hospitality and office building communities.
  • Government… synergizing with federal partners, well linked with state energy offices and state research institutions.
  • Manufacturers… forging relationships with major manufacturers in the fields of HVAC, air purification, building energy efficiency, IEQ and operations management.

Our Founding Partners

International Training Institute

The International Training Institute (ITI) produces and distributes a wide range of training materials for sheet metal workers.  ITI and NEMI support 165 local Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committees (JATC) throughout North America.

National Energy Management Institute

The purpose of NEMI is to educate members of the SMWIA and SMACNA, including developing training materials and instructional aids in the arts and sciences of building environmental systems and educating the public on ventilation systems and their relationship to indoor environmental quality and energy management. Its mission includes identifying emerging markets and employment opportunities in the HVAC industry and developing programs to capitalize on them.

Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association

The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) is an international association of contractors with 1,944 members in 98 chapters throughout North America, Australia, and Brazil.  Members of SMACNA perform work in industrial, commercial, institutional, and residential HVAC markets.  They specialize in HVAC; architectural and industrial sheet metal; kitchen equipment; specialty stainless steel work; HVAC equipment manufacturing; siding and decking; testing and balancing; service; building commissioning; and energy management and maintenance.  SMACNA has also developed technical consensus standards and manuals that are widely accepted by the construction community in the U.S. as well as foreign governments.

Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association

The Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association (SMWIA) serves more than 150,000 members.  The union’s members perform work in the building and construction trades, production manufacturing, and in the railroad and shipyard industries.

University of Nevada Las Vegas

University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) is committed to the development of research programs as applied to economic development and diversification, and as applied to social needs.  Energy efficiency is of critical importance in the extreme desert environment, and proximity to U.S. Department of Energy sites offers unique opportunities for programs that push the envelope in solar, wind, hydrogen and biomass technologies.  Energy efficient housing and indoor air quality are areas where UNLV has built world-class expertise.  Partly this emphasis has been driven by the hotel/casino industry, where both of these themes are critically important to cost reduction and the highest quality experience for guests.
